Under-5 Mortality by country

Compare modelled under-five mortality rates across countries.

Compare under-5 mortality across countries on an interactive world map. Open any country for the latest value, the comparable-sample rank, the source, and the method.

What this measures

Higher modelled under-five mortality; lower modelled under-five mortality.

Unit: deaths per 1,000 live births. Under-five mortality rate.

Methodology

Values are World Bank World Development Indicators SH.DYN.MORT: under-five mortality rate, deaths per 1,000 live births. The figure is a modelled UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) estimate — the probability per 1,000 that a newborn will die before reaching age five if subject to the age-specific mortality rates of that year. It is not a count of registered child deaths, a survey point estimate, infant mortality, neonatal mortality, a healthcare-quality score, or a composite health index. WDI republishes the IGME point estimate only; uncertainty intervals are not included. UN IGME Levels and Trends in Child Mortality 2025 treats 2024 as an estimate; 2025 and later scenario projections are omitted. OurBlueDot does not interpolate, fill missing years, replace missing values with zero, or add projections. Country rows are joined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3; regional and income aggregates are excluded. Map ranks are comparable-sample competition ranks among currently loaded countries (rank 1 is the highest mortality). Lower values are more favorable. Missing countries remain without a value.

Example countries

Open under-5 mortality for a geographically diverse set of countries that currently have a comparable value. This is a crawl path, not a ranking.

Highest and lowest values

These lists use the same comparable-sample ranking as the map for 2024. They include only countries with a finite value among 192 available observations. Missing countries are unranked. This is not a complete world ranking.

How to read this layer

  • Highest and lowest figures on this page are comparable-sample observations, not a complete world ranking. What does a rank mean?

Rankings, where shown, describe only countries with comparable values in the selected period.
